How volunteers are making a difference for people with cerebral palsy in Somerset.
When Cole and Ryley realised there were no local support groups for people with cerebral palsy in Somerset—despite the condition affecting around one in every 400 children—they decided to take action. Their determination led to the creation of Thrive with Cerebral Palsy, a welcoming community where people can come together, share experiences, and support one another.
The group meets on the third Wednesday of every month at Compass Wellbeing in Taunton, offering a friendly and inclusive space for people of all ages. New members are always welcome.
In an interview for the Volunteer in Somerset campaign, Ryley explained: “We wanted to set up Thrive because in Somerset there’s not a cerebral palsy-specific support group, so me and Nicole thought, why not? I get a lot out of it as well—seeing people’s joy, seeing people’s happiness. I’m not in it for myself; I’m in it to give back. Just someone to talk to. They’re going to get what you’re going through.
Cole added: “What I get out of it is to show them that they can do it, even if they’ve got a disability too.”

Huge thanks to Cole, Ryley, all the attendees and support workers at Thrive with Cerebral Palsy, and everyone at Compass Wellbeing for their warm welcome.
