Skills Bootcamp empowers voluntary sector leaders

How our Leadership Skills Bootcamp is developing the next generation of voluntary sector managers.

Our 2021 Reflect, Recover, Renew report highlighted the need within the voluntary, community, faith and social enterprise (VCFSE) sector for a coordinated programme of training.

In response, and thanks to Shared Prosperity Funding, we expanded our existing training programme and provided subsidised places on a 10-week Skills Bootcamp for current and emerging voluntary sector leaders.

Delegates had the opportunity to develop their skills and learn more about effective communication, managing conflict, management, coaching and mentoring, and person-centered leadership.

Recent attendee A.J. Raybould, founder and director of Prodigal Bikes, a charity that refurbishes donated bikes and supplies them to those in need in the UK and Africa, explains how he’s already putting the skills he gained into practice.

“Prodigal Bikes has grown a lot over the past year, so I deal with a lot of people. Being able to understand their personalities, motivate them and resolve conflicts is something I had no idea about before. I feel so much better equipped.

“There was enough depth to the course to challenge those with a lot of experience but it is clear enough that newbies like me can take away the basic concepts.

“I can’t recommend it highly enough, certainly for the charity sector; I actually feel like a manager and leader now. I’m so grateful to Kerry Northcott for being such a good tutor.”
