Chard Community Hub plays a vital role in supporting local people through community activities, food provision and opportunities to connect. As the organisation grew its Director Serena and the Board recognised the importance of strengthening their governance, developing a more strategic approach to fundraising and exploring whether becoming a charity could support their long-term ambitions.
Through a series of one-to-one support sessions, we worked closely with the team to help them build the foundations for future sustainability and growth.
A key area of focus was governance. Together, we reviewed trustees’ skills and experience, helping identify strengths, future development needs and priorities for recruitment. These conversations enabled the organisation to take a more strategic view of Board development and consider how best to build the capacity needed to support its future plans.
We also supported the organisation to think differently about fundraising. Like many small organisations, Chard Community Hub had often found itself responding to funding opportunities as they arose. Through tailored advice and practical resources, we introduced tools to help the team develop a fundraising strategy, identify responsibilities for fundraising activities and explore opportunities to diversify income streams. This has helped the organisation begin moving from a reactive approach towards longer-term financial planning.
Alongside governance and fundraising support, we worked extensively with Serena and the Board as they explored converting from a Community Interest Company (CIC) to a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO).
As part of this journey, Serena attended our specialist legal structures training, which examined the advantages and disadvantages of different legal forms and the practical considerations involved in converting from a CIC to a CIO. Following this, she accessed further support from legal structures specialist Louise Garner, helping the organisation explore the challenges raised by the Charity Commission in greater depth.
After the rejection of an initial charity application, we continued to support the organisation to understand and respond to complex Charity Commission feedback. Drawing on both in-house and specialist expertise, we helped the team review their charitable objects, consider how they could better demonstrate public benefit and assess the options available for progressing towards charitable status.
The process highlighted some of the complexities involved in securing charitable status, particularly in demonstrating charitable need while maintaining an inclusive approach to community support. Through ongoing guidance, signposting and access to specialist advice, the Board gained a clearer understanding of the options available, including refining a future CIO application or exploring alternative routes should permanent premises become available in the future.
While the journey towards charitable status is still ongoing, Chard Community Hub is now better equipped to make informed strategic decisions about its future. The organisation has developed a stronger understanding of governance, fundraising and legal structures, helping to lay the groundwork for a more resilient and sustainable organisation.
By investing time in strengthening its governance, fundraising and organisational development, they are taking important steps towards securing a sustainable future and continuing to support the community for years to come.
