Blog: A quick guide to online fundraising platforms

In today’s digital world, online fundraising platforms are essential tools for charities and social enterprises.

These platforms can provide a user-friendly way to reach a wider audience and manage donations effectively. But with so many options available, how do you choose the right one?

In this blog, our Funding and Enterprise Consultant, Miranda, explores some of the most popular platforms in the UK, their key features, and what they might cost your organisation.

JustGiving

Arguably the most well-known platform in the UK, JustGiving allows individuals and organisations to create fundraising pages for various causes.

Charges: £0-39 per month depending on how much you raise and which features you use, but they take a small percentage of each donation (1.9% + 20p per donation).

Localgiving

This platform focuses on supporting local charities and community groups. They offer a range of resources and support alongside their fundraising tools.

Charges: a monthly subscription fee of £12.50 per month (excl. VAT) and no mandatory payment fees, altough they ask for a ‘tip’ from supporters. They do take a small percentage of each donation (1.9% + 20p per donation).

People’s Fundraising

Similar to JustGiving, People’s Fundraising provides a platform for individuals and organisations to raise money for various causes.

Charges: no monthly fees, but they take a small percentage of each donation (1.75% for donations, fundraisers, teams and in-memory, and 2.75% for events, raffles, shops and auctions). There is a payment processing fee of 0.85% plus 8p for Apple Pay, Google Pay, credit card and debit card, 25p for Direct Debit and 1.4% plus 20p for PayPal.

Crowdfunder

This platform specialises in crowdfunding, allowing organisations to raise funds for specific projects by offering rewards or equity to donors. They also have over £10 million in match funding grants available via +Extra funding to support your charity, community project or sports club.

Charges: 0% platform fee for charity profiles, but 1.9% + 20p per pledge + VAT on UK/EU cards.

CAF Donate

Run by the Charities Aid Foundation, CAF Donate provides a range of online fundraising tools, including donation forms, regular giving options, and Gift Aid processing.

Charges: 4% of the total donation (including Gift Aid).

Enthuse

Enthuse offers a variety of fundraising tools with a focus on digital innovation, including features like virtual events and peer-to-peer fundraising.

Charges: flexible pricing plans from £0-34.99 per month with different features and transaction fees.

Wonderful.org

Wonderful.org is unique in that it doesn’t charge fees for charities or donors, relying instead on optional tips to cover its operating costs.

Charges: no mandatory fees. See details here.

Choosing the right platform

These are just a few of the many online fundraising platforms available to UK charities and social enterprises. The best platform for your organisation will depend on your specific needs and goals. Consider factors such as:

  • Fees: carefully compare the fee structures of different platforms to understand the true cost of fundraising
  • Features: look for features that align with your needs, such as custom branding, recurring donation options, and Gift Aid processing
  • Support: choose a platform that offers excellent customer support to help you navigate any challenges you may experience
  • Target Audience: consider where your target audience is most likely to engage with your fundraising efforts

Ultimately, the key is to do your research and choose a platform that empowers you to reach your fundraising goals effectively.
