Spark iT partners with community spaces to run Digital Cafés across Somerset with over 30 venues opening their doors each month.
Supported by fully trained and Digital Champion volunteers, they’re open to anyone who would like to use the internet safely and access online services that support their health, wellbeing and daily lives.
One of those people is Betty, who is in her early 90s and loves keeping in touch with friends and family by email. But sometimes managing her inbox or reading emails becomes challenging, so she comes to the Digital Café where volunteers support her by reading emails aloud.
On one memorable visit, Betty wanted to try a video call, Centre Manager, Lesley, shared: “A volunteer set up her camera and found a quiet corner where she could sit comfortably. Betty chatted away happily on video, experiencing face-to-face connection with loved ones despite the distance.
Betty has become a regular at the café, and volunteer Morgan (pictured above) has now taken over helping her with her inbox. He regularly helps her with emails from her utility companies and other organisations, as well as friends and family.
Lesley, explains: “For Betty, the Digital Café isn’t just about technology, it’s about preventing isolation, maintaining family relationships, and preserving her independence. The personalised support ensures she can continue doing what matters most: staying connected to the world around her.”
Digital Cafés like this are part of a wider initiative across Somerset, aiming to help people build confidence online. To learn more about Spark iT and Digital Digital Cafés in Somerset, click here.
