In Birchfield, residents are working together and making positive changes in their community.
Over the past two years, our Community Organisers have been embedded within Yeovil’s communities, supporting local volunteering and activities that improve people’s health and wellbeing. We’ve been listening to residents in the Birchfield area, connecting local groups, and helping turn good ideas into real action. The goal? Backing the people who are already making things happen, and helping a neighbourhood build confidence and connections to keep growing on its own terms.
A space for everyone
At the heart of the community is the Birchfield Action Group (BAG). It’s a monthly get-together where anyone can pull up a chair. It’s a place where residents can talk about anything that matters to life in Birchfield, from parking and cycle paths to planning a Secret Santa. BAG brings together neighbours, the school, and local groups to support everyone.
Simple ideas, big impact
The best ideas often come from a simple conversation. Paul, a local resident with a background in telecoms, offered to help someone use their phone. Now he volunteers and runs the Digital Café helping people use their laptops, tablets, phones and stay safe online. And the Digital Café has grown into a busy community café and warm hub.
In the large local park, there is a new Tree Trail created with the local primary school, mapping 12 special trees families can explore together. It’s a simple way to help children feel proud of where they live and connected to the nature on their doorstep.
“Creating a community hub at Birchfield has widened the opportunities for our children… We’ve opened our facilities, like our school kitchen, so they can support the wider community. It enriches our lives and those of our children, and it puts our children at the heart of their community.”
Judy Parker, Headteacher, Birchfield Primary School
Kindness matters
One moment stands out that sums up the spirit of Birchfield. During a local litter-pick, a child asked their mum why they were doing it. She said: “If you are kind, kindness comes back to you.” Later that day, the manager of the local fish and chip shop came out with a hot meal for them as a thank you.
That is what this work is really about – being there for one another.
Whether it’s the school uniform rail helping families with the cost of living, or the Dog Show bringing pooches and people together, Spark Somerset is proud to have been part of Birchfield’s growth, but the real credit belongs to the people of Birchfield who make things happen every day.
